Literacy Night

Two young boys stand behind a large illustrated project board on a grassy field with other displays and a playground in the background.

The Salem Hills Elementary School Title I team organized a Literacy Night to promote literacy and show families how they can support their child’s learning. The Title I Schoolwide Program at Salem Hills provides additional support to help students reach and surpass proficiency in reading and math. While the Title I team provides services during the school day, family events like Literacy Night offer a way to engage another key part of the year’s work: parent involvement.

Families enjoyed a meal together before heading outside for literacy-based activities. Students and families designed bookmarks, tried out STEAMM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math, and Media) challenges, entered to win books and gift cards in a raffle, and walked a story trail after dinner. Every student was able to pick a book to bring home, thanks to the Dakota County Library.

The federally funded Title I program provides academic support for any student at qualifying schools like Salem Hills who show a need for extra support on specific reading or math skills. Family events provide a great opportunity to bring families into the school with their children. The events focus on fun ways to get students and families reading and learning together, and they offer families techniques that they can use at home to support their child’s learning. Schools in the district, Inver Grove Heights Schools (ISD 199), continue to provide as much Title I support as possible despite significant cuts to its funding.

Thank you to everyone who came to this fall’s Literacy Night, and thank you to the staff and organizations who made this event possible!
